To advance education for residents of Stevenage Borough Council area, in particular, but not exclusively, by provision of grants to enable them to take higher education courses.
The tenth Annual General Meeting for the Betty Game Opportunities Trust was held in the parish room at Holy Trinity Church on Saturday 25 January 2020 at 2.30pm. There was a short meeting to report on the Trust and its accounts which was then followed by a get-together and a raffle for our funds.
We were pleased to welcome the Deputy Mayor of Stevenage Mr Jim Brown who spoke to the meeting about the importance of education and the influence that teaching and learning can have upon people’s life chances and opportunities.
There was also a small presentation of a book token given to the retiring chair of the Trust Mr Jim Wilcock as a gesture of thanks for all his work over many years. The new Chair of Trustees Norman Herbert expressed his thanks to Jim for remaining a Trustee for a further year in order to hand-over the reins.
The Trustees for 2020 are:
Norman Herbert (Chair), Dr Robin Bailey (Treasurer), Pat Milliner (Clerk to the Trust), The Revd Mervyn Terrett, Margaret Ashby, Frank Ogilvie, and Cllr Sharon Taylor OBE.
Mervyn’s Fun Quiz
As many of you will already know, Mervyn’s Fun Quiz on Saturday 14th March 2020 was cancelled due to the Coronavirus (COVID 19) Pandemic. This was to be held to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Betty Game Opportunities Trust and was to be hosted by the Trust’s original Quiz Master, the Revd Mervyn Terrett. So it was very sad that it did not take place. Mervyn was the first MC and also the first Chair of Trustees when the charity was started back in 2010.
Thankfully, due to the generosity and good will of everybody, including the Fish and Chip Shop, 97 High Street, Stevenage, we were still able to raise £240 for the Betty Game Opportunities Trust. Thank you to everyone who donated their ticket money even though the quiz was cancelled. We hope to hold another quiz when restrictions are lifted and we are also planning a Christmas paper quiz that can be undertaken at home – details to follow soon.
As a result of the Coronavirus (COVID 19) Pandemic, the Betty Game Opportunities Trust is currently holding its committee meetings online. We met virtually on Monday 13 July and also on Monday 12 October 2020. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 9 December 2020.
We have not yet decided upon arrangements for our AGM in January for 2021 but this might likely be by Zoom as well.
So far this year we have awarded 11 grants to students totalling £4,950. This is an average of £450 each. The most common request has been for help to purchase a laptop.
Recipients are studying a range of higher qualifications in midwifery, adult nursing, acupuncture, music, embroidery, social sciences, law, politics, information and communication technologies.
We also have three applications currently pending (27.10.2020).
We did have some problems with the website during the summer months but we are pleased to say this is now up and running although we have lost some of the posts and photographs. We are hoping to have a PayPal button on the website so that you can make donations and are also looking into a Just Giving Page and if you use Amazon you may have noticed that you are sometimes asked if you want to use Amazon Smile which makes donations to charities and we are pursuing this. Details will be circulated.
